How to Sail from Croatia to Greece on a $50/Day Budget

Every summer thousands of sailors blow €4,000–€6,000 each hopping from Split to Santorini. We did the exact same 620-nautical-mile route for €347 per person, four crew, twelve days, zero drama. The secret? Bullet-proof marine parts Yanmar in the engine bay, genuine marine parts Tohatsu on the dinghy transom, and a spreadsheet that would make an accountant weep with joy.

The Boat & The Budget

2004 Bavaria 36, “Luna”, bought for €54,000 in 2023.

Engine: Yanmar 3YM30 (29 hp).

Dinghy: Highfield UL290 + Tohatsu 6 hp 4-stroke.

Crew: four adults who agreed that €50/day each covered everything—food, fuel, marinas, wine, customs, spares, the lot.

Pre-Departure: The €312 Spares Kit That Saved Our Ass

  • Full Yanmar service kit (filters, belts, impeller, zincs) – marine parts Yanmar OEM: €198
  • Two spare Tohatsu impellers + spark plug + shear pins – marine parts Tohatsu: €48
  • 10 L engine oil + 5 L gearbox oil (Yanmar spec): €66 Total: €312 split four ways = €78 once-off. That’s €6.50/day insurance against a €2,000 tow.

Day-by-Day Real Costs (June 2025)

Day 1 – Split ACI to Vis, Komiza (€0)

Anchored outside the harbour. Marine parts Yanmar purred at 2,200 rpm, burning 2.1 L/h. Grilled sardines on deck: €8 total.

Day 2 – Vis to Lastovo, Skrivena Luka (€0)

Dropped hook in the inner bay. Dinghy ashore with marine parts Tohatsu that started first pull every single time. Local wine refill €2/litre.

Day 3 – Lastovo to Mljet National Park (€18)

Park fee split four ways = €4.50 each. Replaced Tohatsu water-pump impeller in 11 minutes using marine parts Tohatsu we carried—saved €180 labour.

Day 4 – Mljet to Korčula ACI (€48)

One night only. Bought ice and 60 L diesel @ €1.48/L. Yanmar zincs still perfect thanks to genuine marine parts Yanmar.

Day 5 – Korčula to Dubrovnik ACI (€68)

Expensive, but we needed showers and a Lidl run. Stocked €120 of food for the offshore legs.

Day 6 – Dubrovnik to Herceg Novi, Montenegro (€25 customs)

Cleared out Croatia in Cavtat (free), entered Montenegro in Zelenika. Anchored Port of Bar—free.

Day 7 – Bar to Shengjin, Albania (€0)

Night passage, 82 nm. Marine parts Yanmar never missed a beat. Albanian courtesy flag €8 saved €50 fine.

Day 8 – Shengjin to Saranda (€12 clearance)

40 L diesel @ €1.32/L—cheapest of the trip. Marine parts Tohatsu pushed us to the fuel dock in 4 minutes flat.

Day 9-10 – Saranda to Corfu via Erikousa (€0)

Anchored Erikousa north cove. Zero fees. Solar panel kept the beers cold.

Day 11-12 – Corfu Garitsa Bay (€0)

Finished with €42 left in the kitty.

The Hard Numbers (Per Person)

  • Marinas & fees: €179 total ÷ 4 = €44.75
  • Fuel: 192 L @ €1.45 avg = €278 ÷ 4 = €69.50
  • Food & wine: €312 ÷ 4 = €78
  • Spares (marine parts Yanmar + marine parts Tohatsu): €312 ÷ 4 = €78
  • Ice/beer/misc: €108 ÷ 4 = €27 Grand total: €347.25 each for 12 days = €28.94 per day Yes, we came in €21 under budget.

The Non-Negotiables

  1. Never skimp on marine parts Yanmar—a €38 fake impeller in Greece costs €2,500 when it shreds your exhaust elbow.
  2. Carry two complete marine parts Tohatsu water-pump kits. Ten-minute fix at anchor beats a €300 tow.
  3. Anchor out 9 nights out of 12. That single decision saved €1,400.
  4. Buy diesel in Albania. €0.16/L cheaper than Greece changes everything.

We arrived Corfu with engines that never hiccuped, a dinghy that started first pull every time, and €84 cash still in the communal wallet. That’s $50/day sailing from Croatia to Greece—done, dusted, and fully repeatable.

Anyone who tells you it can’t be done is buying fake marine parts Yanmar and paying Greek marina prices. Don’t be that guy.
